Dentistry during pregnancy

One question that I\’m commonly asked is if having dental treatment done during pregnancy is safe.  The answer is Yes!  There are a number of conditions that can occur in your mouth during pregnancy, many women experience gingivitis and a higher risk of decay due to all the changes in their bodies during pregnancy, so it is very important to keep up on your dental visits.  Furthermore, poor habits during pregnancy have been associated with premature delivery, intrauterine growth restriction, gestational diabetes and preeclampsia.

What is Pregnancy Gingivitis?

I\’s a condition some women develop during pregnacy where their gums can become red, swollen, and or tender.  They may bleed when you brush or floss.  The best way to prevent this is to brush and floss regularily keeping things clean, and to continue to have your teeth professionally cleaned by your hygienist every 6 months, though some women may require more frequent cleanings during pregnancy.

Why are pregnant women at higher risk of cavities?
It could be due to a change in diet.  Also morning sickness can increase the amount of acid in your mouth, which can weaking your enamel.  Brush and floss regularily to counteract this!
