A crown is a type of indirect restoration that covers the entire above the gums surface of the tooth.
Some reasons that we may recommend a crown for your tooth are:
• Your tooth is broken
• Your tooth has cracks in it and we suspect it might break
• Your tooth has a large filling in it and we suspect it might break
• Your tooth has had a root canal (which puts the tooth at higher risk of breaking)
As you can see the purpose of the crown is to protect the tooth and hold it together, as well as to restore it to function. Crowns are strong and hard which allows you to continue to chew and bite with your tooth is ways that a large filling may not stand up to.
